Your Inheritance: Why Some Magic Skips Generations
or does it?
Some families pass down heirlooms
such as china cups, a quilt, a ring worn smooth by time. Others pass down something less visible: a certain way of seeing the world.
I was lucky. My mom could tap into her past lives, my dad could ‘see’ when his granny was coming to visit, and my grandparents channeled their ancestors during séances. What’s important to know is this: It’s not that my family was particularly psychic, but they were open to the Unseen and they supported others who were the same.
Now you may have an ancestor who painted scenes no one else could see, healed with herbs, saw omens in bird flight, or built things with uncanny precision. But their gift might’ve gone quiet for a generation or two, silenced by religion, war, or the simple need to survive.
Then, one day, it reappears in you.
That’s inherited magic. And I don’t believe you’d be on The Hidden Path unless you have some of that magic too.
You magic may be dramatic or as quiet as an empty room. Sometimes it can look like a viral TikTok, your intuitive way of communicating with animals, or your comfort around the dying. But often, it’s the echo of someone long gone saying, We’re still here. You still carry us in your genes.
Why Does Magic Skip Generations
Well, I don’t think it really does . . . when a gift vanishes, it isn’t lost, it’s just lying dormant. Families are like little ecosystems; what one branch can’t sustain, another might.
Your grandmother may have kept her divination cards hidden; then you build a tarot business.
Your father suppressed his empathy because ‘men don’t cry’; next generation, you may be the son or daughter who becomes a therapist.
Your great-aunt’s second sight might have been reborn as your photographic eye.
The question isn’t whether your family tree had magic. It’s which kind, and how it wants to live through you now.
That’s the work. Not proving it exists. Not waiting for permission. Just recognizing what’s already there and deciding what you’re going to do with it.

The Hidden Inherited Magic Spread
If you want to discover more about the magic hiding in your tree, get your tarot, or oracle, or even your own homemade cards. You’ll need a quiet space - unless you’re one of those who work well in a coffeehouse - your journal (paper or digital), and one question in mind: What inherited magic wants expression through me?
My cards are shown above, just so you can see the layout I used - but feel free to lay out the cards in any design you like.
Also, instead of tarot I pulled out the Enchanted Earth Oracle because I feel that my family’s magic is earth-centric. If your cards have words (like mine do), focus more on the images - they typically hold far more information than the words.
A 5-Card Spread for Inherited Magic
What quiet spark of power was never extinguished? (Mine: Take Flight)
How does this magic uniquely express itself through my lineage? (Mine: Grateful)
What energy, belief, or event caused this power to fade? (Mine: Observe)
Where does this magic live in my body, spirit, or daily life today? (Mine: Come as you are)
What practice, devotion, or creative act reawakens it fully? (Mine: Guardian)
Write down your inherited magic, then place the paper somewhere meaningful, like beneath a candle, a photo, or inside a journal pocket or in your wallet: Good to have on days you forget who you are.
Mini Ritual: The Thread Returns
Take a single strand of thread, string, or yarn.
Wind it around your wrist and say to yourself:
Through me, what was hidden is known again.
Leave it on your wrist until the next New Moon (January 18), then untie or burn it with intention, thanking the ancestors for your magic.
Remember, the magic in your family tree didn’t vanish . . . it was just waiting for you.

Thank you for this post. The magic definitely seems to have skipped (hidden) 1-2 generations. I'm 53yo, and had many different "psychic gifts/abilities " open up in the past few years.
I've been tiptoeing around embracing that I am a witch of some kind. I've been studying Shamanic practices with teachers ( because being a Shamanic person seemed more "normal") than being witchy! Releasing many of the hooks of generational Catholic upbringing is challenging.
1week ago was the first time I wrote in my journal in all caps I AM A WITCH.
I was finally honest with myself.
It's nothing to do with having a "title". It felt like a welcoming to a much more comfortable/fitting circle of souls.
I'll do this as my morning ritual/meditation today.
My birthday is Jan 18th. Perfect timing for me!
The spiral path continues...🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀
This post made me tear up as I read it. I am just coming to the realization that I am a manifestation of other generations magick. I'm almost 50 and it's taken me this long to be open to and realize I am magical but that magic feels tied to something/someone else. I'm so glad I haven't this group and you to help me widen my perspective and help guide me.
