As you probably know,
I frequently use a pendulum in my ancestral work. It’s a fantastic tool for asking about gender, age, and geographic locale. After you discover the basics, you can then ask yes-no questions about the life they lived. You’d be surprised, I think, at just how much information you can discover by using your pendulum.
(By the way, you may want to read my post on Pendulum Boards)
Pendulum Techniques
Please leave a comment about which of these techniques you use in your own practice.
1. Divination & Yes/No Questions
Use your pendulum to receive yes/no/maybe answers to questions. Establish baseline movements for each response before starting. This is called calibrating a pendulum. Once calibrated you won’t have to do it again.
2. Dowsing for Energy or Objects
Locate energy hotspots, ley lines, or lost objects by allowing the pendulum to guide you toward them. I’ve done this exercise to map the energy hot spots in Port Townsend, Washington.
3. Communicating with Spirits or Guides
Ask for guidance from spirits, ancestors, or deities by setting up a pendulum chart with letters, numbers, or symbols. I love using a pendulum in ancestral work as the Ancestors seem to love giving me direct answers via the pendulum. By the way, I have a pendulum I use only for ancestral work, so it’s built up a lot of power.
4. Charging & Cleansing Crystals
Use the pendulum to direct energy into a crystal for charging or to remove stagnant energy for cleansing. Be certain to set a clear intention before beginning.
5. Spellcasting & Energy Direction
Swing the pendulum over spellwork or sigils to amplify intent and raise energy. This is really an exercise is transforming intent to action. Again, intention is everything.
6. Determine the Best Timing for Rituals
Use the pendulum to divine the most auspicious time for spellwork, moon phases, or ritual planning. Hold your pendulum still, then clearly ask your timing question. Be sure you’ve calibrated the pendulum to yes-no-maybe. You may want to repeat the question to confirm timing.
7. Choose Magical Tools or Ingredients
Let the pendulum guide you in selecting herbs, crystals, or tarot decks that align with your current needs. Clearly lay out options (herbs, crystals, tarot decks, etc) in front of you. Hold your pendulum still above each choice, one by one, and then ask clearly, "Is this item the best choice for my magical intention?" If your pendulum doesn’t move, this may indicate that none of the choices are the best for your intentions.
8. Connect with Past Lives
Use the pendulum to explore past life connections by asking specific questions about time periods, locations, or lessons carried into this life. I like holding a pendulum over a map on my iPad. Or, sketch a map of a country you feel a kinship to . . . working with the pendulums and past lives is one of my favorite ways to use the pendulum. Try it!
9. Determine if a Spirit or Energy is Presence
Use the pendulum to detect spirit activity or energetic imprints in your home or sacred space. Ask if a spirit is present and use further questions to identify its nature. This requires a lot of yes-no questions. But the more strategic the questions, the deeper you can go into the Spirit’s life when incarnate.
10. Test the Energy of Food or Drinks
Hold the pendulum over food or drinks and observe its motion to determine whether they hold positive or negative energy for YOU before consuming or using them. This is very much like the muscle testing method, but even better because you don’t need a partner to pull on your arm! In case you’re wondering this works without the actual food or drink. You can either envision or simply say the name and ask a yes-no.
I’d love a comment to let me know how you’re using YOUR pendulum.

I loved this post! I only use mine intermittently - you’ve inspired me to reconnect with them!
There ae some new ideas I haven't thought of. Thanks. I used it a couple years ago in Sedona to locate a "power spot" to stand on to connect to the ancient energies. Trippy!
