Creating a Tarot Vision Board in Your Journal
time to think about the seeds that need planting
I’m sure you already know this, (but in case you don’t) . . .
a vision board is an incredible tool for manifesting goals and dreams. When combined with tarot, it becomes a deeply symbolic and intuitive process. Today I’m going to show you how to create a tarot vision board in your journal to clarify your aspirations and set intentions for _______________ (fill in the blank).
Below, you’ll find steps for creating your vision board in your tarot journal, as well as a separate section on including ancestral work.
Vision Board Tarot
Step 1: Set Your Focus
Start by deciding the focus of your vision board. Is it for a specific goal, such as a career shift or finding love? Or is it broader, like embodying joy, abundance, or spiritual growth? It could also be a tool for setting intentions for a new year or an upcoming Sabbat.
Write a brief intention at the top of your journal page or a dedicated section of your journaling space. For example: "I open my heart to love, attracting a joyful and supportive partnership that aligns with my highest good."
Step 2: Choose Your Tarot Cards
Shuffle your deck while focusing on your intention. Draw 3–5 cards that represent the energy or themes you want to manifest. If you prefer, you can intentionally select cards that resonate with your goals. For instance:
The Empress for creativity, abundance, or nurturing energy.
The Sun for success, vitality, and joy.
Two of Cups for everlasting love.
The Ace of Wands for setting a new exercise goal.
Queen of Pentacles for better self-care.
Lay the cards in front of you and reflect on how their imagery connects with your intention.
Step 3: Interpret the Cards
Write down your interpretations for each card, focusing on what they symbolize relative to your vision. Use these prompts to guide you:
What does this card suggest I focus on to achieve my goal?
How does this card inspire me to take action?
What are first steps to turning intention to action?
For example, if you pulled The Moon for first steps, you may want to reassess your assumptions about meeting/not meeting your goals. (Moon can be illusionary). If you need to draw more cards, please do.
Step 4: Create Your Visual Layout

In your journal, arrange drawings, photocopies, or descriptions of the cards you chose. Use colored pens, stickers, or embellishments to enhance the imagery. You might draw rays of light connecting the cards to symbolize flow or add keywords around each card to reinforce its meaning.
For example, place The Sun in the center to represent your ultimate goal, with The Empress and The Ace of Pentacles radiating out as supporting energies.
Step 5: Write Affirmations and Actions
Around your tarot vision board, write affirmations inspired by the cards. For instance:
“I nurture my creative projects with love and patience.”
“Abundance flows to me with ease.”
“I am focused and confident in pursuing my dreams.”
Below the affirmations, jot down actionable steps you can take to bring your vision to life. These might include practical tasks, like updating your resume, or spiritual practices, such as meditating on The Empress.
Step 6: Reflect and Revisit
Your tarot vision board is a living part of your journal. Revisit it regularly to check in with your progress. Reflect on how the cards’ energies are showing up in your life and adjust your affirmations or actions as needed.
Vision Board Tarot with Your Ancestors
1. An Ancestor's Guidance Card
Draw a court card to represent the ancestor who is currently guiding you. Then draw an additional card to suggest specific guidance or wisdom this ancestor offers toward your vision or goal. For example:
“What wisdom does my guiding ancestor want to share about manifesting love (or another focus)?”
If, for example you’re creating a vision board for more happiness then draw the Knight of Pentacles, it could be suggesting you plant the seeds for doing more of what makes you happy. (See those neatly plowed fields just waiting for intentions?)
2. Ancestral Strengths and Gifts
You can also pull cards to uncover ancestral strengths that you can channel into your goal. These could act as a ‘foundation’ on your journal vision board. Prompts might include:
“What strength have I inherited from my ancestors that supports this goal?” Draw a card.
“What gift or talent from my lineage will help me along the way?” Draw a card
"What’s at the end of this vision board journey?” Draw a card.
“Any advice on what not to do?” Draw a card.
If you like, you can use these cards as cornerstones for your vision board. Also, it’s FINE to use Oracle cards too, like these:
Southern Botanic Oracle by Stacey-Williams-Ng of La Panthere Studio
3. Healing Ancestral Patterns (Optional)
Draw a card to represent any ancestral pattern or challenge that might block your goal. Then, draw another card for how to heal or transform that pattern. You can journal affirmations for breaking the cycle and incorporate the healing card’s energy into your vision board.
4. Calling in Ancestral Archetypes (Optional)
Think about archetypal roles within your lineage (e.g., the Nurturer, Warrior, Visionary, Healer) and pull a card for each archetype’s influence on your goal. For example:
“How does the Healer archetype in my lineage support my journey?”
“What lesson does the Warrior archetype want me to embrace?”
You can add these cards to the vision board to represent ancestral energies at work. (If you don’t want to print or draw the tarot cards, you can purchase books of stick-on tarot cards, like the Weiser Tarot Journal, which has almost 2,000 stickers)
5. Ancestral Blessing Card (Optional)
Draw a card to symbolize an ancestral blessing you are receiving at this time to help achieve the goals or intentions in your Vision Board. This could represent spiritual protection, encouragement, or a nudge toward specific actions.
Integration into the Vision Board
Place the ancestor’s card at the top or center to symbolize their guiding presence.
Add ancestral strengths or archetypes around the focus card to reflect their influence.
Include affirmations or quotes inspired by the ancestors’ wisdom, such as: “My lineage teaches me resilience and love.”
I decided to start an art/visual journal in the coming year so that I can channel the more creative side of myself and I'm also hoping to get back in touch with my tarot practice so this seems like a perfect way to do both of those things. I'll share with you once I have it completed.
Wow! This will be fun, and enlightening.
